    1 pg. letter, approx. 7-7/8" x 9-3/4", dated at
    Bridgeport, Connecticut, Apr. 6, 1848
    , from Isaac Sherman, to Abijah Catlin, Comptroller of the State of Ct., at Hartford.
    The stampless folded letter has a red BRIDGEPORT/Ct. cds postmark, red PAID & 5 handstamps.
    The writer of this letter,
    ISAAC SHERMAN
    , (1788-1863), was the
    first Mayor
    of the city of Bridgeport in 1836. He later was named Postmaster (1841).
    Good content inquiring about the Revolutionary War service of Eli Smith in 1777.
    Includes:
    "Sir,
    Will you do me the favour to send me your official certificate to prove the service of Eli Smith as a private (as I believe) in Capt. Solomon Booth's Company of Infantry in Col. Eno's Regiment from the time Col. Eno's Regiment was raised, which was in June 1777. I want to shew where sd. Regiment was that Summer & how long in service. I believe it was 7 months, and where & how it served after that. As near as I can ascertain, said Eli Smith served in sd. Booth's Co. in sd. Regt. in 1777, 7 months or more - and served again the following or next, but one following year in the same Co. & Regt. Please certify to what you find that you think will be important to prove the service of sd. Smith.
    Capt. Booth was a resident of Stratford during the Revolutionary War. I inclose for fees (the widow is poor) and as I suppose the search will not be dificult.
