Here we have a fantastic pair of Walt Disney’s Pinocchio character masks with their original envelope that were a give away premium from the Gillette Co. of Canada. The masks have a copyright date of 1939 Walt Disney Productions on one flap of each mask, as well as “Pinocchio Masks Free Only with Gillette Blue Blades”, on the other flap of each mask. Although these do have the copyright of 1939 on them, they probably were not released until early 1940 as the Film was released in Feb 1940. It was Disney’s second Full Length Animated Feature following up on the Success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves released in 1937. Clearly Gillette wanted to capitalize on the popularity of Disney’s new release. There are two Mask included here one of Pinocchio and the other of Geppetto. I am unsure of how many different masks were in the series but I have seen at least one other (Jiminy Cricket). They come with the original Envelope they were distributed in. It measures approximately 10 inches by 12 inches and the mask fit comfortably inside. The envelope states “Printed In Canada” on it. I believe this set was issued in the USA as well, but the Canadian version are much scarcer. Canadian version were printed at a fraction of the American version, due to the Massive population difference between the two nations at the time. The envelope has some light wrinkling, but is free from tears, or heavy creases ect. It is a fine example. The Pinocchio mask has some print scuffs, or scratches in his hair, and has an area of discoloration to the back. It is free from tears or creasing and I think displays very well for a child paper toy of this age. The Geppetto mask is also free from creasing or tears and also displays nicely. I have taken many photos for you to be able to judge the condition for yourself. This is a great early Disney premium item. As its paper I imagine not many survived over the years. Keep in mind the WW2 paper drives it has had to dodge, not to mention many of these being used as masks by children. These are little nostalgic miracles of survival.
Don’t miss out on these over 80 year old Walt Disney Items.
