It will be four weeks next Thursday she may venture out into the adjoining room ..."; "Our daughter is smart handsome, we think will neigh ten pounds is very healthy stretches and grunts all the time."
New Haven, postmark Jan 2, letter Dec 29 / 66 [1866] - "Emma has been failing in strength ..."; "I told her not to be troubled. She would be better so soon as her strength come. She said no, no, never, and then for the first time introduced the subject of religion ..... saying that she was a great Siner and that she had gone beyond the mercy of God and so was lost, I tried to reason with her but her mind has to far gone also refused to eat any thing took no notice of her child or any one. Doct told Mother he could do nothing more for her nervous system had entirely given out and then the mind went with the rest."; "... so on Christmas day James came over went up with me taking Emma with us She is now in the Dormitory as comfortable a place as could be at home."
New Haven, Feb 24 / 67 [1867] - "I am happy to say Emma is home seamed glad to get home. But her mind is in the dark, E. is very desponding, sad, dwells upon her troubles constantly says she will never be as hapy again. Thinks that we ought not to have taken her there."; "She don't seam to possess the power to throw off the trouble, she has no less love for Little Hattie, no one could have esp a Mother. Emma thinks she remained to long at the Retreat, if I had only taken her after being there 3 weeks then all would been well but cant tell may be so. I feel that her mind is not strong yet."
