    AMHERST
    , OCT. 25TH, 1868
    MY DEAR JULIA
    reads in part ...
    in answer to your
    several
pleasant and mildly sarcastic letters I would say as follows ... i'm in debt for the lock of hair you sent me .... i shall prize it as a memento of you .... I feel kindly toward those young ladies whose crazy idea has robbed us of our pleasure ... what in the world could they want to come to Amherst for? I hope you won't be troubled by the depth of thought contained in this letter, for i really feel very intellectual this morning ... what's the good of having a sister if you can't talk and write to her just as you please? ... there'd be no particular advantage in having a sister, if you felt obliged to be as smart and proper with her as with mere acquaintances and common friends .... your
    affectionate
    brother, Wm. S. Keese
