Exceptional early 1900’s 100% original hand carved Tlingit - Haida argillite totemic stone flat panel pipe. It was professionally restored to include a copper bowl and bone mouth piece and custom made wood and bone display. The man figure is adorned with a 3 ring potlatch hat embracing a long billed Raven and keeping it silent by holding the beak closed. Silencing the Raven is symbolic in the native culture and can tell the story of death and celebrating the afterlife with peace. This tobacco pipe is in exceptional condition with no chips or cracks. Around 10 inches from end to end and 11 inches including the wood base. Came from a local estate of high end native artifacts and Alaskana. Other argillite totems were at the same sale and were early. Please check out my other great and rare Alaskan auctions.
